Matt Morris

Matt Morris is a writer based in South New Brighton. He has been involved in the community food and food justice scene in New Zealand since the late 1990s, and completed a PhD on Ōtautahi Christchurch’s gardening history in 2006.

He was Sustainability Manager at the University of Canterbury from 2009-2025, and in that time published two books through Otago University Press: Common Ground: Gardening Histories of Aotearoa (2020) and Bob Crowder: A New Zealand Organics Pioneer. Matt first met Bob in aisle seven of St Martins New World in 1994, where he was set on his journey into sustainability and the organics sector.

Matt is currently writing a book about community gardening.
